Script to teleprompter

Paste your script and read it full screen, scrolling at your speaking pace. Works on a laptop, tablet or phone. Nothing is uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Paste your script into the box. Paragraph breaks are kept.
  2. Set the speed in words per minute. It matches the pace in the words to minutes calculator, so the estimated running time is accurate.
  3. Pick a text size you can read comfortably from where you will sit.
  4. Press Start. The prompter opens full screen, paused, with your first line on the reading guide. Press space or tap to begin.

Keeping eye contact while you read

  • Put the screen as close to the lens as you can. The further your eyes travel from the camera, the more obvious the reading is.
  • Read from the guide line. It sits a third of the way down, which keeps your gaze near the top of the screen and closer to a laptop or phone camera.
  • Sit further back and make the text bigger. From a distance, your eyes move less to read the same line.
  • Use mirror mode with a beam-splitter. If the screen sits under a glass in front of the lens, flip the text so the reflection reads correctly.

Write for the prompter

Scripts written to be read silently trip you up on camera. Keep sentences short, one idea each. Write numbers the way you say them, so “about two thirds”, not “66%”. Drop parentheses and asides, because you can’t say them out loud. Put a line break where you want to breathe, and the prompter will show it. Need a script to start from? The script generator writes a hook and outline in that style.

FAQ

Questions

Is this teleprompter free?

Yes, with no account and no limit. It runs entirely in your browser.

Does it save my script?

No. Your text stays in the page and is never uploaded or stored, so refreshing the page clears it. Keep your script somewhere else and paste it in when you record.

Can I use it on a phone or tablet?

Yes. Tap the text to pause or play and drag it to move back or forward. Where the browser allows it, the screen stays awake while the prompter is open.

What does mirror mode do?

It flips the text horizontally. Teleprompter rigs with a beam-splitter glass reflect the screen, which reverses it; mirroring the text makes the reflection read the right way round.

What speed should I use?

Start at your normal speaking pace in words per minute and adjust while you rehearse. If you find yourself waiting for the text, speed up; if you are chasing it, slow down. The words to minutes calculator explains how to measure your pace.

Write it and read it in one place

Hookquill’s script editor has a teleprompter view built in, set to the speaking pace in your profile, so the script you finish is the script you read.
