How to use the hooks

The first 30 seconds decide whether someone watches the rest. YouTube Studio even reports how many viewers are still there at the 30-second mark. A hook has three jobs, in order: prove the viewer clicked the right video, open a question they now need answered, and show them that staying will answer it.

  1. Put your title in the topic box. The first sentence of the hook should touch the exact promise the viewer clicked on. If you have a title, use it.
  2. Compare the types, not the wording. The three hooks take three different routes into the same video. Decide which route suits it, then polish the words.
  3. Read each one aloud at your normal pace. If it runs past 30 seconds, cut it. If you would never say a phrase, change it.
  4. Fill the markers. Replace any [CHECK] with a real figure from a source you trust, and any [STORY] with something that actually happened to you.

The five hook types

  • Curiosity gap. Opens a specific question and holds the answer back.
  • Stakes. Makes the cost of not watching concrete, usually a mistake the viewer is making right now.
  • Contrarian. Challenges something the audience believes. Only works if the video earns it.
  • Story cold open. Drops the viewer into a moment with a person, a want and an obstacle.
  • Result first. Shows the end result up front, then promises the path to it.

Examples

Three hooks for a video on meal prep for night-shift workers:

Stakes

If you eat your biggest meal at 3 a.m. because that’s when the break room is quiet, the food isn’t the problem. The timing is. Here’s how to prep a week of meals around a shift that starts when everyone else is going to bed.

Contrarian

Breakfast, lunch and dinner is a day-shift idea. On nights, planning around three meals is why you’re starving at four and wired at nine. So let’s drop the schedule and build one around your shift instead.

Curiosity gap

There’s one meal night-shift workers skip that makes the whole week harder. It isn’t breakfast. By the time we’ve prepped the week together, you’ll know which one it is and what goes in the box instead.

What makes a hook weak

  • A greeting, the channel name, or “in this video I’m going to”.
  • A vague tease like “this one thing changed everything” with nothing concrete.
  • Openers viewers have learned to skip: “Have you ever wondered”, “Did you know”, “Picture this”.
  • A promise the video never keeps. It wins the click and loses the viewer.

Once you have a hook, the title generator can make sure the title and the opening line tell the same story.

FAQ

Questions

How long should a YouTube hook be?

Roughly the first 15 to 30 seconds, which at a conversational pace is about 40 to 75 words. The generator keeps each hook in that range. Shorter is usually better, as long as the promise and the question are both there.

Which type of hook is best?

The one your video can actually pay off. A contrarian hook with nothing to back it up loses viewers the moment they notice, and a story hook needs a real story. Pick the type that fits what the video delivers, then the wording.

Can I use these hooks for YouTube Shorts?

They are written for long-form videos. For a Short, keep the first sentence or two. The whole Short is often shorter than a long-form hook.

Why does a hook contain [STORY: ...]?

The generator knows nothing about your life, so it never invents an experience and puts it in your mouth. Where your own story would be the strongest opening, it leaves a marker and a question so you can drop the real one in.

Does it work in other languages?

Yes: English, Hindi, Urdu, Spanish, Portuguese, German, French, Indonesian, and Arabic. Hooks are written natively in each language, not translated from English.
